Protection

Protected and conserved areas (PCAs) are a cornerstone of nature conservation. Canada has adopted a target to protect 30 per cent of its lands and waters by 2030.

Protected and conserved area coverage in Canada, measured as the proportion of ecodistrict protected in 2022.

Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) coverage in Canada, measured as the proportion of protected and conserved area coverage of KBAs within an ecodistrict in 2022.

Protected Connected Index (ProtConn) in Canada evaluates structural connectivity — how protected areas are connected to each other — and is measured as the proportion of ecodistrict protected and connected in 2022.

Protected Area Representativeness and Connectedness Index (PARC-Connectedness) in Canada, measured as the proportion of ecodistrict protected and connected, considering the functional connectivity of protected areas and other areas of intact natural ecosystems in 2022.

Species Protection Index in Canada measured by a native species’ proportion of habitat currently protected relative to its total habitat distribution within an ecodistrict in 2022.
